In Depth

OFFICINE PANERAI PRESENTS THE POCKET WATCH TOURBILLON GMT CERAMICA, an exclusive pocket watch which combines the technical content of contemporary haute horlogerie with echoes of the history of the Florentine brand: indeed the inscription “Pocket watches by the main Swiss makers” appeared on the window of Orologeria Panerai in Florence at the start of its activities. The Pocket Watch Tourbillon GMT Ceramica consists of a Radiomir case 59 mm in diameter in ceramic made from zirconium oxide, inside which is the P.2005/S movement with tourbillon regulator, enhanced by the sophisticated skeleton structure which enables distinctive technical aspects of this movement to be seen. The P.2005/S has a power reserve of six days: the unusual feature of this sophisticated movement, completely developed and made in the Officine Panerai manufacture in Neuchâtel, is that the tourbillon cage makes two rotations per minute on an axis perpendicular to that of the balance, so as to compensate for running errors due to gravity. A small ecru disc reflects the rotation of the tourbillon by making two rotations per minute within the small seconds dial positioned at nine o’clock. The chain of this pocket watch is attached to the case by a skeleton device shaped like the characteristic bridge that protects the winding crown of the Panerai Luminor, and it too is made of black ceramic. The individual links, the shape of which is inspired by that of a nautical chain, are linked by universal joints which make it flexible as well as strong. Once the chain has been removed by pressing on a small button, the Pocket Watch Tourbillon GMT Ceramica can then be transformed into a table clock by using the special support, also inspired by the shape of the bridge, which holds the case. The chain can also be stored inside it. The Pocket Watch Tourbillon GMT Ceramica is an exclusive Special Edition. As is traditional with the brand, this pocket watch is also water-resistant and guaranteed to a pressure of 3 atmospheres (30 metres).

Panerai watches are produced to very high standards of quality. It is worth remembering that the mechanical parts run 24 hours a day when used, so the watch must undergo regular maintenance to ensure long life and good operation.

Have your watch checked periodically for water-resistance by an Authorized Panerai Service Centre and restore it every two years with regular servicing, or whenever the watch has to be opened. Restoring the watch’s water-resistance necessarily involves replacing the seals so as to ensure the maximum water-resistance and security. Where the watch is used in underwater sports activities, it is recommended that it should be checked every year before the season of underwater activities begins.

Have the movement of your watch checked periodically by an Authorized Panerai Service Centre so as to maintain its perfect operation. If the watch tends to gain or lose time significantly, the movement may need to be overhauled. The movements are designed to withstand temperature variations between -10°C and +60°C (14°F and 140°F). Outside this range of temperatures, operational variations exceeding those set out in the specifications of the movement may be noticed. In addition, there is a risk that the lubricants contained in the movement may deteriorate, resulting in damage to some of its parts.

To keep the exterior in perfect condition, we recommend washing your Panerai watch with soap and warm water, using a soft brush. After this operation, and also after bathing in the sea or a swimming pool, carefully rinse the watch with clean water. All Panerai watches can be cleaned with a soft, dry cloth.

P.2005/S calibre

The P.2005/S skeleton hand-wound mechanical movement with a diameter of 16¼ lignes and 31 jewels, is characterised by the exclusive Panerai tourbillon that rotates perpendicularly to the axis of the balance, completing two rotations a minute instead of one, as in traditional tourbillons. This rate of rotation ensures greater accuracy and better compensation of the effects of gravity on the movement (this tourbillon is an Officine Panerai registered patent). Consisting of 277 components, the movement is the result of the exceptional work of Officine Panerai’s master watchmakers and, thanks to its three spring barrels, guarantees the Radiomir Tourbillon GMT Ceramica – 48mm a power reserve of six days, indicated by a hand that can be seen through the case back. To enhance the beauty of the Panerai skeleton movement, the watch has no dial: the numerals and indexes are engraved on the flange.
