In Depth

LUMINOR MARINA ORACLE TEAM USA 8 DAYS ACCIAIO – 44mm OFFICIAL WATCH OF ORACLE TEAM USA Among the Official Watches of ORACLE TEAM USA of the 2017 America’s Cup is the Luminor Marina ORACLE TEAM USA 8 Days, an icon among the watches which can boast a historic link with the sea. The case of the new Luminor Marina ORACLE TEAM USA 8 Days is made of AISI 316L stainless steel, it is 44 mm in diameter and it is fitted with the classic device for protecting the winding crown, which contributes to its high degree of water-resistance of 30 bar (about 300 metres). The black dial, with the classic Panerai sandwich structure, ensures excellent visibility under the poorest lighting conditions, with large linear markers and figures and a small seconds counter at 9 o’clock, where the blue seconds hand rotates. Like the other Official Watches dedicated by Panerai to ORACLE TEAM USA on the occasion of the 2017 America’s Cup, this Special Edition is also personalised by small details using the official colours of the defender of the competition, with the blue of the seconds hand, the inscription America’s Cup at 6 o’clock and the red of the sewing contrasting with the black leather strap. The America’s Cup logo is heat-embossed on the strap while on the back, in relief, is the logo of ORACLE TEAM USA and a drawing of the yacht. The Luminor Marina ORACLE TEAM USA 8 Days (PAM00724) uses a hand-wound P.5000 calibre, a movement entirely developed and made in the Manufacture in Neuchâtel, with a long power reserve of eight days, which was inspired by the historic watches created by Panerai for the commandos of the Italian Navy.

Maintenance

Panerai watches are produced to very high standards of quality. It is worth remembering that the mechanical parts run 24 hours a day when used, so the watch must undergo regular maintenance to ensure long life and good operation.

WATER-RESISTANCE

Have watch checked periodically for water-resistance by an Authorized Panerai Service Centre and renovate it every two years with regular servicing, or whenever the watch has to be opened. The restoration of water-resistance necessarily involves replacing the seals in order to ensure the maximum water resistance and protection. Where the watch is used in underwater sports activities, it is recommended that it should be checked every year before the underwater activities begin.

THE MOVEMENT

Have the movement of watch checked periodically by an Authorized Panerai Service Centre in order to preserve its perfect operation. If the watch has a tendency to gain or lose time to a significant degree, the movement may need to be overhauled. The movements are designed to withstand temperature variations between -10°C and +60°C (14°F and 140°F). Outside this range of temperatures, operational variations exceeding those set out in the specifications of the movement may be noticed. In addition, there is a risk that the lubricants contained in the movement may deteriorate, resulting in damage to some of its parts.

CLEANING THE EXTERIOR

To keep the exterior in perfect condition, we recommend washing Panerai watch with soap and warm water, using a soft brush. After this operation, and also after immersion in the sea or a swimming pool, carefully rinse the watch with fresh water. All Panerai watches can be cleaned with a soft, dry cloth.

THE STRAP

Panerai straps must be washed in warm water and left to dry. It is important not to dry them on a hot surface or expose them to direct sunlight, because the rapid evaporation of the water could damage their shape and quality. After each immersion in the sea or a swimming pool, carefully rinse the strap with fresh water. It is recommended that the strap and the buckle should be replaced by an Authorized Distributor or a Panerai Service Centre, in order to avoid any problems caused by incorrect replacement. Only an Authorized Distributor or Panerai Service Centre can guarantee the use of genuine Panerai straps, properly designed to fit the dimensions of the case and manufactured according to the quality standards of the brand. All alligator leather used by Officine Panerai comes from farms in Louisiana, USA. Officine Panerai’s suppliers have committed to the highest standard of responsibility and have given their assurance that such farms in Louisiana contribute to the stable growth of wild alligators, thus protecting this endangered species. Panerai does not use leather coming from endangered species taken from the wild.

Movement

P.5000 calibre

A power reserve of eight days and hand-wound: the P.5000 calibre combines these two characteristics which are part of the history of Panerai watches since the first models created for the commandos of the Italian Navy. With a diameter of 15½ lignes (35.1 mm) and a thickness of 4.5 mm, the P.5000 calibre has 21 jewels, it is made up of 127 component parts and its balance wheel oscillates at a frequency of 3 Hz, equivalent to 21,600 vibrations/hour. Its original, very strong structure recalls that of old movements in which the mechanism was contained between two plates concealing most of the wheels and allowing only a few details to be seen, such as the balance cock and the intermediate wheel. The P.5000 calibre has a variable inertia balance, its period of oscillation being adjusted by turning the little timing screws on the outside of the balance wheel. Using this system the balance spring is free, without the curb pins which would otherwise be used to modify its active length. The bridge supporting the balance is fixed by two screws beneath which are threaded rings which turn in both directions, the purpose of which is to adjust the endshake of the balance staff pivots. This technical solution helps the escapement to continue running perfectly in the event of shocks. The long power reserve of 192 hours, that is 8 days, is achieved by coupling the two spring barrels with toothed rims in series. The twin assembly enables longer, thinner springs to be used, resulting in a longer duration and greater uniformity in delivering energy to the movement.
