In Depth

ANOTHER TRIBUTE BY OFFICINE PANERAI TO THE OCEANIC WORLD, an instrument designed for diving professionals: the Luminor Submersible - 44 mm by Officine Panerai. The Luminor Submersible - 44 mm by Officine Panerai is an automatic chronometer, a modern evolution of a model created in 1956 for the Egyptian Navy, with an eight-day Angelus movement, a seconds dial at 9 o'clock, a large case and graduated rotating bezel for easy underwater reading. The Luminor Submersible - 44 mm inherits the decisive personality of Officine Panerai's historic model, shown in the characteristic bezel, as well as in the watch's reliability under extreme conditions of use. It has radial movement, with a metallic ring that significantly improves the precision of the click and guarantees better resistance to wear and high temperatures. By using a mechanical movement with an automatic charge, we improve the watch's functionality with respect to its predecessor, reflecting the constant technical advancement constantly pursued by Officine Panerai with dedication, in order to attain the highest reliability and quality. Animating Officine Panerai's Luminor Submersible is the Panerai OP III calibre, measuring 13 ¼ lignes in diameter, and with 21 rubies; with 42 hour reserve. The chronometer, issued by C.O.S.C. certificate, is characterised by the bridges and oscillating weight decorated and personalised by Officine Panerai. The case, made of polished steel, has the same shape as the first Luminor (but with a diameter of 44 mm), with more solid horns, in order to resist pressures up to 300 metres in depth and to all the stresses related to professional underwater activities. The case is completed with a satin and unidirectional rotating bezel (with one-minute click), with a milled edge for easier gripping and reference markers applied to its top with a graduated scale for the first 15 minutes; 15, 30 and 45 minutes are highlighted, while the main reference indicator is covered with Super-Luminova®. The black-background dial features luminescent hour markings as well as two large Roman numerals, the semi-skeleton hands and the small seconds hand which also boast a luminescent coating. The anti-reflecting sapphire crystal is designed to withstand pressure at 3.5 mm thick, and a small lens inserted in its thickness makes the date easier to read.

AISI 316L 1.4435 stainless steel is Officine Panerai’s material par excellence since it is highly resistant to corrosion and is hypoallergenic, making it ideal for contact with the skin.

The Panerai watches created for the Italian Navy were made of austenitic stainless steel, a reliable material that was also resistant to the extreme environmental conditions in which the commandos operated. AISI 316L, a specification of the American Iron and Steel Institute, is an austenitic stainless steel alloy with a chromium content of 16–18%, 11–14% nickel and 2–3% molybdenum.

Officine Panerai uses the low-carbon variant of this alloy: the lower carbon content of the steel improves its welding qualities where the metal’s thickness is 6mm or less. The excellent technical qualities of this material make it an essential element of every new Officine Panerai collection.

Panerai watches are produced to very high standards of quality. It is worth remembering that the mechanical parts run 24 hours a day when used, so the watch must undergo regular maintenance to ensure long life and good operation.

Have watch checked periodically for water-resistance by an Authorized Panerai Service Centre and renovate it every two years with regular servicing, or whenever the watch has to be opened. The restoration of water-resistance necessarily involves replacing the seals in order to ensure the maximum water resistance and protection. Where the watch is used in underwater sports activities, it is recommended that it should be checked every year before the underwater activities begin.

Have the movement of watch checked periodically by an Authorized Panerai Service Centre in order to preserve its perfect operation. If the watch has a tendency to gain or lose time to a significant degree, the movement may need to be overhauled. The movements are designed to withstand temperature variations between -10°C and +60°C (14°F and 140°F). Outside this range of temperatures, operational variations exceeding those set out in the specifications of the movement may be noticed. In addition, there is a risk that the lubricants contained in the movement may deteriorate, resulting in damage to some of its parts.

To keep the exterior in perfect condition, we recommend washing Panerai watch with soap and warm water, using a soft brush. After this operation, and also after immersion in the sea or a swimming pool, carefully rinse the watch with fresh water. All Panerai watches can be cleaned with a soft, dry cloth.

Panerai straps must be washed in warm water and left to dry. It is important not to dry them on a hot surface or expose them to direct sunlight, because the rapid evaporation of the water could damage their shape and quality. After each immersion in the sea or a swimming pool, carefully rinse the strap with fresh water. It is recommended that the strap and the buckle should be replaced by an Authorized Distributor or a Panerai Service Centre, in order to avoid any problems caused by incorrect replacement. Only an Authorized Distributor or Panerai Service Centre can guarantee the use of genuine Panerai straps, properly designed to fit the dimensions of the case and manufactured according to the quality standards of the brand. All alligator leather used by Officine Panerai comes from farms in Louisiana, USA. Officine Panerai’s suppliers have committed to the highest standard of responsibility and have given their assurance that such farms in Louisiana contribute to the stable growth of wild alligators, thus protecting this endangered species. Panerai does not use leather coming from endangered species taken from the wild.
