The perfectly transparent mineral glass sphere of the new Table Clock (PAM00581) presents two fascinating views of the timepiece: one from the front, of the unmistakable Panerai dial mounted in the centre of the sphere, and the other from the back, which enables the exquisite finish and fine details of the P.5000 manufacture movement to be admired. The two faces express the two authentic identities of Officine Panerai: its long history of Italian excellence, which is expressed in a design of unmistakable purity, and its Swiss watchmaking expertise. The dial of the Panerai timepiece, the heart of the new Table Clock, is one of the most recognisable iconic elements in the history of mechanical watchmaking. The minimalism of the design, with linear hour markers alternating with large figures at the cardinal points, ensures excellent legibility which is further enhanced by the construction of the dial itself. Since the 1930s, the dials of Panerai watches have been made of two superimposed plates enclosing luminous material, the luminescence of which shines through openings in the upper plate corresponding to the hour markers. The result is a dial of great intensity, very legible under even the poorest lighting conditions, that is absolutely modern as only the classics of design can be. Through the mineral glass hemisphere, which protects the dial and at the same time enlarges it through its magnifying effect, it is also possible to admire other details of vintage inspiration, such as the inscription “Radiomir Panerai” and “8 Days” which are engraved, not printed, on the dial. The Table Clock is the first such timepiece with a mechanical movement made by Panerai: the manufacture P.5000 calibre. The large winding crown at 12 o’clock is enclosed by a stirrup of polished steel, the original design of which – in honour of Officine Panerai’s historic association with the world of the sea and of sailing – is inspired by that of the shackle, the accessory common on sailing yachts which enables ropes or steel cables to be fixed in a simple, secure way. The spherical clock is elegantly and securely supported on the table by a round base of brushed steel, personalised with the engraved “Officine Panerai” name.

Materials

Steel

AISI 316L 1.4435 stainless steel is Officine Panerai’s material par excellence since it is highly resistant to corrosion and is hypoallergenic, making it ideal for contact with the skin.

The Panerai watches created for the Italian Navy were made of austenitic stainless steel, a reliable material that was also resistant to the extreme environmental conditions in which the commandos operated. AISI 316L, a specification of the American Iron and Steel Institute, is an austenitic stainless steel alloy with a chromium content of 16–18%, 11–14% nickel and 2–3% molybdenum.

Officine Panerai uses the low-carbon variant of this alloy: the lower carbon content of the steel improves its welding qualities where the metal’s thickness is 6mm or less. The excellent technical qualities of this material make it an essential element of every new Officine Panerai collection.

Movement

P.5000 calibre

A power reserve of eight days and hand-wound: the P.5000 calibre combines these two characteristics which are part of the history of Panerai watches since the first models created for the commandos of the Italian Navy. With a diameter of 15¾ lignes (35.7 mm) and a thickness of 4.5 mm, the P.5000 calibre has 21 jewels, it is made up of 127 component parts and its balance wheel oscillates at a frequency of 3 Hz, equivalent to 21,600 vibrations/hour. Its original, very strong structure recalls that of old movements in which the mechanism was contained between two plates concealing most of the wheels and allowing only a few details to be seen, such as the balance cock and the intermediate wheel. The P.5000 calibre has a variable inertia balance, its period of oscillation being adjusted by turning the little timing screws on the outside of the balance wheel. Using this system the balance spring is free, without the curb pins which would otherwise be used to modify its active length. The bridge supporting the balance is fixed by two screws beneath which are threaded rings which turn in both directions, the purpose of which is to adjust the endshake of the balance staff pivots. This technical solution helps the escapement to continue running perfectly in the event of shocks. The long power reserve of 192 hours, that is 8 days, is achieved by coupling the two spring barrels with toothed rims in series. The twin assembly enables longer, thinner springs to be used, resulting in a longer duration and greater uniformity in delivering energy to the movement.
