Platinum is a rare metal, one of the rarest and most valuable in the world: to obtain just a few grams, for example, it is necessary to mine and process up to ten tonnes of rock. Processing this raw material and turning it into an ingot of platinum takes five months of work, while in the case of gold only three tonnes of rock and five weeks of work are needed. When it was discovered in Colombia in 1750, the similarity of platinum’s appearance to silver gave it its name - plata in Spanish means “silver” - but in terms of value and simplicity of working, the two materials are very different.
Officine Panerai uses 950 platinum (Pt950 Ru, 95% pure platinum) and its specific weight is 11% heavier than 24K gold. This alloy is recommended for machining, but it is not suitable for casting and cannot be hardened by heat treatment. Ductile, malleable and corrosion-resistant, platinum requires a long, complex working process. Stamping a platinum case, for example, requires a specially calibrated press.
The tooling used is subject to greater wear, and meticulous cleaning of the technical instrumentation is required. The polishing stage is particularly complicated and very different from that used for gold, because of the particular characteristics of this material. It has to be carried out entirely by hand, since it cannot be done using automatic tools. The engraving stage is similarly very complex.
Platinum has a good level of hot and cold deformability. Air annealing can be carried out without difficulty. It is advisable to limit the number of times the metal is annealed and to carry out preliminary hardening of at least 30%. The time and temperature of annealing must be controlled to prevent enlargement of the grain (“orange peel” effect).
Panerai watches are produced to very high standards of quality. It is worth remembering that the mechanical parts run 24 hours a day when used, so the watch must undergo regular maintenance to ensure long life and good operation.
Have watch checked periodically for water-resistance by an Authorized Panerai Service Centre and renovate it every two years with regular servicing, or whenever the watch has to be opened. The restoration of water-resistance necessarily involves replacing the seals in order to ensure the maximum water resistance and protection. Where the watch is used in underwater sports activities, it is recommended that it should be checked every year before the underwater activities begin.
Have the movement of watch checked periodically by an Authorized Panerai Service Centre in order to preserve its perfect operation. If the watch has a tendency to gain or lose time to a significant degree, the movement may need to be overhauled. The movements are designed to withstand temperature variations between -10°C and +60°C (14°F and 140°F). Outside this range of temperatures, operational variations exceeding those set out in the specifications of the movement may be noticed. In addition, there is a risk that the lubricants contained in the movement may deteriorate, resulting in damage to some of its parts.
CLEANING THE EXTERIOR
To keep the exterior in perfect condition, we recommend washing Panerai watch with soap and warm water, using a soft brush. After this operation, and also after immersion in the sea or a swimming pool, carefully rinse the watch with fresh water. All Panerai watches can be cleaned with a soft, dry cloth.
Panerai straps must be washed in warm water and left to dry. It is important not to dry them on a hot surface or expose them to direct sunlight, because the rapid evaporation of the water could damage their shape and quality. After each immersion in the sea or a swimming pool, carefully rinse the strap with fresh water. It is recommended that the strap and the buckle should be replaced by an Authorized Distributor or a Panerai Service Centre, in order to avoid any problems caused by incorrect replacement. Only an Authorized Distributor or Panerai Service Centre can guarantee the use of genuine Panerai straps, properly designed to fit the dimensions of the case and manufactured according to the quality standards of the brand. All alligator leather used by Officine Panerai comes from farms in Louisiana, USA. Officine Panerai’s suppliers have committed to the highest standard of responsibility and have given their assurance that such farms in Louisiana contribute to the stable growth of wild alligators, thus protecting this endangered species. Panerai does not use leather coming from endangered species taken from the wild.
The P.2002 hand-wound calibre is the progenitor of the P.2000 series and it takes its name from the year in which the project was launched to supply Panerai watches with movements entirely designed and developed at the Manufacture in Neuchâtel. The P.2002 calibre consists of 247 components; it has 21 jewels and a thickness of 6.6 millimetres. Hand-wound and with a power reserve of 8 days with linear indicator on the dial, it has the characteristics peculiar to all the calibres of the P.2000 series: great structural strength; three spring barrels; GMT function with 24-hour indicator; seconds reset device; rapid adjustment of local time; free-sprung balance; balance wheel oscillating at 28,800 alternations per hour (a frequency which is unusual in a movement with a large power reserve). The three spring barrels in series, the design of which is an Officine Panerai patent, ensures the delivery of an even, optimal force which remains stable for 8 days, thus delivering a force which is constant for all the days of the power reserve. The P.2002 calibre also has the seconds reset device which resets the seconds hand to zero, enabling the watch to be synchronised perfectly with a reference time signal. The operation of the system designed by Officine Panerai is unique: when the winding crown is pulled out to the second position, a thin blade moves into contact with the balance wheel, stopping it. At the same time, a small hammer lever moves downwards and acts on a heart-shaped cam, which instantly moves the seconds hand to the zero position. As soon as the winding crown is returned to the normal position, the balance wheel is freed, the hammer lever is raised, thus releasing the cam, and the seconds hand resumes its normal course.
