In Depth

OFFICINE PANERAI PRESENTS A NEW, VERY ELEGANT SPECIAL EDITION, THE RADIOMIR 10 DAYS GMT ORO BIANCO, which combines the exclusivity of white gold with the technical performance and sophisticated finishes of the P.2003 in-house movement. The aesthetic of the Radiomir draws inspiration from the design of the watch created by Panerai in 1936 for the Royal Italian Navy and is enhanced by the black dial with the characteristic sandwich structure and a date window, the linear indicator displaying the remaining power reserve and the small seconds dial positioned at 9 o’clock, which also contains a further hand for am/pm indication. At the centre are the hour and minute hands and the hand for the second time zone, an invaluable function for travellers. The fine quality of the finish of the P.2003 movement, entirely created at the Officine Panerai Manufacture in Neuchâtel, can be admired from the sapphire crystal case-back. Through it, one can also see the brand name and logo which appear on the oscillating weight in relief – rather than being engraved – as well as on the case-back itself. The P.2003 calibre is 13¾ lignes in diameter and consists of 296 components, with 25 jewels. The P.2003 is an automatic calibre with a 10-day power reserve, operated by an oscillating weight mounted on ball bearings, which winds the spring barrels as it rotates in both directions. Radiomir 10 Days GMT Oro Bianco is water resistant to approximately 5 BAR (~50 metres).

White Gold

Gold is a very dense metal, soft, highly ductile and malleable. The special alloys used by Officine Panerai are characterised by their great resistance and natural colour.

The white gold alloy contains 15% Palladium (Pd) to give the desired white colour. To preserve the tonal characteristics typical of this type of gold, it is not rhodium plated.

Panerai watches are produced to very high standards of quality. It is worth remembering that the mechanical parts run 24 hours a day when used, so the watch must undergo regular maintenance to ensure long life and good operation.

Have watch checked periodically for water-resistance by an Authorized Panerai Service Centre and renovate it every two years with regular servicing, or whenever the watch has to be opened. The restoration of water-resistance necessarily involves replacing the seals in order to ensure the maximum water resistance and protection. Where the watch is used in underwater sports activities, it is recommended that it should be checked every year before the underwater activities begin.

Have the movement of watch checked periodically by an Authorized Panerai Service Centre in order to preserve its perfect operation. If the watch has a tendency to gain or lose time to a significant degree, the movement may need to be overhauled. The movements are designed to withstand temperature variations between -10°C and +60°C (14°F and 140°F). Outside this range of temperatures, operational variations exceeding those set out in the specifications of the movement may be noticed. In addition, there is a risk that the lubricants contained in the movement may deteriorate, resulting in damage to some of its parts.

To keep the exterior in perfect condition, we recommend washing Panerai watch with soap and warm water, using a soft brush. After this operation, and also after immersion in the sea or a swimming pool, carefully rinse the watch with fresh water. All Panerai watches can be cleaned with a soft, dry cloth.

Panerai straps must be washed in warm water and left to dry. It is important not to dry them on a hot surface or expose them to direct sunlight, because the rapid evaporation of the water could damage their shape and quality. After each immersion in the sea or a swimming pool, carefully rinse the strap with fresh water. It is recommended that the strap and the buckle should be replaced by an Authorized Distributor or a Panerai Service Centre, in order to avoid any problems caused by incorrect replacement. Only an Authorized Distributor or Panerai Service Centre can guarantee the use of genuine Panerai straps, properly designed to fit the dimensions of the case and manufactured according to the quality standards of the brand. All alligator leather used by Officine Panerai comes from farms in Louisiana, USA. Officine Panerai’s suppliers have committed to the highest standard of responsibility and have given their assurance that such farms in Louisiana contribute to the stable growth of wild alligators, thus protecting this endangered species. Panerai does not use leather coming from endangered species taken from the wild.

P.2003 calibre

The P.2003 was the first automatic movement entirely designed and created by the Officine Panerai Manufacture in Neuchâtel. It is an automatic calibre of advanced technical content with an exceptionally long power reserve of 10 days, displayed on the dial by a linear indicator. Made up of 296 components and with 25 jewels, the P.2003 calibre is 13¾ lignes in diameter with a thickness of 8 mm. It has all the technical characteristics which form the DNA of the P.2000 series (free-sprung balance wheel with inertia regulation; 28,800 alternations per hour; three spring barrels; GMT function with 24-hour indication; rapid adjustment of local time; date; balance wheel stop; seconds reset device) but it is distinguished by having automatic winding with a power reserve of 10 days, operated by an oscillating weight mounted on a ball bearing, which winds the springs of the barrels as it rotates in both directions. The P.2003 calibre also has the seconds reset device which resets the seconds hand to zero, enabling the watch to be synchronised perfectly with a reference time signal. The operation of the system designed by Officine Panerai is unique: when the winding crown is pulled out to the second position, a thin blade moves into contact with the balance wheel, stopping it. At the same time, a small hammer lever moves downwards and acts on a heart-shaped cam, which instantly moves the seconds hand to the zero position. As soon as the winding crown is returned to the normal position, the balance wheel is freed, the hammer lever is raised, thus releasing the cam, and the seconds hand resumes its normal course.
