TWO YEARS AFTER THE EXTRAORDINARY INTERNATIONAL RECOGNITION GIVEN TO ITS FIRST WATCH WITH A BRONZE CASE, Officine Panerai presents the Luminor Submersible 1950 3 Days Power Reserve Automatic Bronzo, a new Special Edition produced in this material with its decisively nautical character which owes its fascination to the aged appearance it acquires with the passage of time. The new feature which distinguishes this model is in the dial: the display of the power reserve of three days on an arc-shaped indicator positioned at four o’clock. This very useful function joins the date display, the device for zeroing the seconds hand that is invaluable when synchronising the watch with a reference time signal, and the system for rapidly adjusting the time, the hand of which can be moved forward or backwards in jumps of one hour without affecting the running of the watch. The dark green dial, with applied hour markers, is surrounded by a studded bezel in bronze with the scale for measuring the length of the dive. The bezel is connected to the case by a special system designed and patented by Officine Panerai to ensure that the ratchet moves precisely from one click to the next. The case is the classic size for Panerai watches, 47 mm in diameter, fitted with the equally classic bridge device with the locking lever ensuring the water-resistance of the winding crown. The sapphire crystal back is fixed by a titanium ring through which can be seen the Panerai P.9002 calibre, developed and produced entirely in the Officine Panerai manufacture. The Luminor Submersible 1950 3 Days Power Reserve Automatic Bronzo is water-resistant to 30 BAR (~300 metres) and is completed by a brown leather strap with stitching of a subtly nautical character and a titanium buckle.

Materials

Bronze

Bronze has a long history, dating back as far as the second millennium BC. At that time, it was used to produce items such as tools, weapons, musical instruments and armour, being stronger and tougher than its predecessors copper and stone. Bronze consists of copper with a variable percentage of tin. It may also contain varying amounts of aluminium, lead, beryllium, manganese and tungsten, sometimes with silicon and phosphorus as well.

Bronze is very versatile and it is highly valued for its many different uses: in the arts, in sculptures (80% copper and 20% tin) and for making bells (21.5 to 24% tin), the creation of hydraulic systems where the bronze alloy contains 10% of tin and 3% of zinc, and the more recent use of this material for ship propellers, where its high resistance to corrosion by seawater is invaluable. And in the past, since its resistance to corrosive seawater is much greater than that of iron, this alloy was used for the equipment of many yachts of yesteryear: portholes, handrails, cleats, winches and compass binnacles were made of bronze, and it was also used for divers’ helmets.

Its ancient history and its close links with the world of the sea make bronze the material that embodies the core values of Officine Panerai, which uses an alloy of copper and tin in the pure state. In addition to its high structural strength, this material retains its original warm tones while with the passage of time it acquires an aged appearance through the patina that covers it.

This patina is the result of the reaction of the bronze with external agents such as air, moisture, heat and friction. It does not alter the properties of the material, but it is evidence of ageing, giving each piece its own unique personality. The patina of the bronze is its skin: it is a protective layer, and as the surface of the metal becomes covered, it slows down any further oxidation of the metal.

Maintenance

Panerai watches are produced to very high standards of quality. It is worth remembering that the mechanical parts run 24 hours a day when used, so the watch must undergo regular maintenance to ensure long life and good operation.

WATER-RESISTANCE 

Have watch checked periodically for water-resistance by an Authorized Panerai Service Centre and renovate it every two years with regular servicing, or whenever the watch has to be opened. The restoration of water-resistance necessarily involves replacing the seals in order to ensure the maximum water resistance and protection. Where the watch is used in underwater sports activities, it is recommended that it should be checked every year before the underwater activities begin.  

THE MOVEMENT

Have the movement of watch checked periodically by an Authorized Panerai Service Centre in order to preserve its perfect operation. If the watch has a tendency to gain or lose time to a significant degree, the movement may need to be overhauled. The movements are designed to withstand temperature variations between -10°C and +60°C (14°F and 140°F). Outside this range of temperatures, operational variations exceeding those set out in the specifications of the movement may be noticed. In addition, there is a risk that the lubricants contained in the movement may deteriorate, resulting in damage to some of its parts. 

 

CLEANING THE EXTERIOR

To keep the exterior in perfect condition, we recommend washing Panerai watch with soap and warm water, using a soft brush. After this operation, and also after immersion in the sea or a swimming pool, carefully rinse the watch with fresh water. All Panerai watches can be cleaned with a soft, dry cloth. 

THE STRAP

 Panerai straps must be washed in warm water and left to dry. It is important not to dry them on a hot surface or expose them to direct sunlight, because the rapid evaporation of the water could damage their shape and quality. After each immersion in the sea or a swimming pool, carefully rinse the strap with fresh water. It is recommended that the strap and the buckle should be replaced by an Authorized Distributor or a Panerai Service Centre, in order to avoid any problems caused by incorrect replacement. Only an Authorized Distributor or Panerai Service Centre can guarantee the use of genuine Panerai straps, properly designed to fit the dimensions of the case and manufactured according to the quality standards of the brand. All alligator leather used by Officine Panerai comes from farms in Louisiana, USA. Officine Panerai’s suppliers have committed to the highest standard of responsibility and have given their assurance that such farms in Louisiana contribute to the stable growth of wild alligators, thus protecting this endangered species. Panerai does not use leather coming from endangered species taken from the wild.

Movement

P.9002 calibre

The P.9002 calibre, created entirely by Officine Panerai and used in a series of Luminor 1950 and Radiomir models, is fitted with various functions: it is an automatic calibre with a 3-day power reserve and a unique technical design which makes this movement immediately recognisable. The calibre has a diameter of 13¾ lignes and numerous features: two barrels which guarantee 72 hours of power reserve; a single piece rotor which winds by moving in both directions thanks to an automatic ratchet device; a balance wheel with adjusting screws, oscillating at a frequency of 4 Hz; a date display and a seconds reset device which resets the seconds hand, enabling the watch to be synchronized perfectly with a reference time signal. To house this movement, a specially made version of the Luminor 1950 case has been designed, keeping the proportions of the original but featuring a slightly less convex sapphire crystal which only barely protrudes from the bezel. The P.9002 is a variant of the P.9001 automatic calibre with several additional features: GMT, or rather a second time zone, indicated by a central hand, seconds reset and power reserve indicator.
