In Depth

The absolute purity of Panerai’s design achieves an unprecedented and exclusive expression in the new gold pocket watch, an extremely elegant Special Edition of only 50 units each: the Pocket Watch 3 Days Oro Bianco (PAM00529). The pocket watch is one of the most elegant and sophisticated masculine accessories: it was only during the First World War that the wearing of wristwatches began to spread among men, gradually transforming the pocket watch as an everyday item into an exclusive rarity, reserved for connoisseurs and collectors. In the first decades of the 20th century, Panerai’s Orologeria in Florence was a popular destination for anyone looking for a pocket watch, as is expressed by the inscription “Orologi da tasca delle principali marche svizzere” (“Pocket watches of the main Swiss brands”) on the window facing the Baptistery in Piazza San Giovanni. The case of the Panerai pocket watch has the simple, perfect cushion shape of the Radiomir, the first prototypes of which date from 1936. Available in white gold, the polished case 50 mm in diameter has a single gold bow surrounding the winding crown at 12 o’clock, instead of the classic wire strap attachments. The dial of the watch is in the classic Panerai style, with large baton hour markers and numerals at the cardinal points, and it has the sun-brushed finish which endows both versions – anthracite for the white gold model and brown for the red gold – with a sophisticated appearance of great depth. The new pocket watches reproduce the construction which has been typical of Panerai dials since the 1930s: two superimposed discs enclose a layer of ecru Super-LumiNova®, which shines with exceptional brightness through the apertures in the upper disc corresponding to the hour markers. This structure ensures remarkable legibility even under conditions of very poor light. As is often the case with precious objects of understated elegance, it is the back of the watch that hides the most fascinating surprise for enthusiasts of high quality watchmaking. The large round cover concealing the movement can easily be opened in order to admire the finish of the P.3001/10 calibre, completely developed and made in the Officine Panerai manufacture at Neuchâtel and presented for the first time in a new version, with the bridges and the two barrels skeletonised and with chamfered polished angles. The skeletonising enables the finish and sophistication of the details of the movement to be observed, such as the wheelwork and the gilded engraving. It also reveals the operation of the calibre, for example, the unwinding and winding of the springs in the barrels as the watch is running or while it is being wound. A fascinating spectacle which is protected and concealed from view by means of the polished cover, the outside of which can be personalised with engraving. Also completely original and with every detail designed by Officine Panerai is the watch chain 40 cm long, the design of which is inspired by nautical chains. Like the case, it is made entirely in white gold, terminated by two hooks of the same material which engage easily and securely. Consistent with the history of the brand, every Panerai watch has a high degree of water-resistance and the the Pocket Watch 3 Days Oro Bianco is no exception, being guaranteed to resist a pressure of 5 BAR (~50 metres). The exquisite mahogany box specially made to contain the watch also includes a special stand on which the watch can be placed when it is not being worn, turning it into a unique table clock.

Panerai watches are produced to very high standards of quality. It is worth remembering that the mechanical parts run 24 hours a day when used, so the watch must undergo regular maintenance to ensure long life and good operation.

Have your watch checked periodically for water-resistance by an Authorized Panerai Service Centre and restore it every two years with regular servicing, or whenever the watch has to be opened. Restoring the watch’s water-resistance necessarily involves replacing the seals so as to ensure the maximum water-resistance and security. Where the watch is used in underwater sports activities, it is recommended that it should be checked every year before the season of underwater activities begins.

Have the movement of your watch checked periodically by an Authorized Panerai Service Centre so as to maintain its perfect operation. If the watch tends to gain or lose time significantly, the movement may need to be overhauled. The movements are designed to withstand temperature variations between -10°C and +60°C (14°F and 140°F). Outside this range of temperatures, operational variations exceeding those set out in the specifications of the movement may be noticed. In addition, there is a risk that the lubricants contained in the movement may deteriorate, resulting in damage to some of its parts.

To keep the exterior in perfect condition, we recommend washing your Panerai watch with soap and warm water, using a soft brush. After this operation, and also after bathing in the sea or a swimming pool, carefully rinse the watch with clean water. All Panerai watches can be cleaned with a soft, dry cloth.

P.3001/10 calibre

The P.3001/10 calibre, designed and created at the Panerai Manufacture in Neuchâtel is a hand-wound movement characterised by hand-polished bevelling. The thickness of the calibre is 6.3 mm and the diameter is 16 ½ lignes, a substantial size which traces its origins to that of the movements which were fitted to the vintage Panerai models. The P.3001/10 calibre has different features: two barrels which guarantee 72 hours of power reserve, visible from the power reserve indication on the back, seconds reset and quick change of time. With this calibre the hour hand can be moved forwards and backwards in steps of exactly one hour. At the same time the date is adjusted accordingly. *The number of components, as well as the finish, varies according to the watch model and its calibre.
