OFFICINE PANERAI PRESENTS THE LUMINOR 1950 3 DAYS CHRONO FLYBACK ORO ROSSO, a new chronograph with flyback function and an automatic movement with a power reserve of three days. The new chronograph in red gold is the first to be made by Officine Panerai using the new P.9100 calibre, developed and produced entirely in the Panerai manufacture in Neuchâtel. The flyback function, controlled by a push-button at eight o’clock, instantly returns the chronograph hands to zero and simultaneously restarts without it being necessary first to stop them and return them to zero by pressing the stop and reset buttons. To make it clear and easy to read, the chronograph minutes and seconds hands are both positioned centrally on the main dial and distinguished by being different colours: the seconds hand is blue while the minute hand is gold in colour, advancing instantly in one jump every sixty seconds. This arrangement enables the quintessential design for the black dial to be used, with its distinctive simple bar hour markers and numerals at the cardinal points, date window at three o’clock and small seconds dial at nine o’clock. The structure of the dial is that designed by Panerai in the late 1930s to ensure high visibility even in very low lighting conditions, and it is formed of two superimposed plates, the upper one being perforated to correspond with the markers on the dial so that the luminescence of the Super-LumiNova® can be seen. The case of the new Luminor 1950 3 Days Chrono Flyback Oro Rosso is 44mm in diameter and water-resistant to 5 BAR (~50 metres). On the back of the case, the 12-sided caseback has at its centre a large sapphire crystal window which reveals the manufacture P.9100 movement. The Luminor 1950 3 Days Chrono Flyback Oro Rosso is supplied with a brown alligator strap which is easily replaced by means of the Panerai interchangeability device fitted in the lug of the watch.
Red gold is an alloy composed of gold, copper and other metals, and due to its technical properties and elegant appearance, it is an ideal material for use in fine watchmaking. The red gold used by Officine Panerai is a special alloy, different from standard red gold, called 5Npt.
Panerai 5Npt has a percentage of copper giving the material an intense red hue that is particularly elegant and sophisticated. Platinum is another fundamental element of the Panerai red gold alloy, as it helps to prevent the metal from oxidising. 5Npt has another important property: it has a high mechanical resistance than standard pink and yellow gold. It is the perfect material for Panerai high-end watches.
Panerai watches are produced to very high standards of quality. It is worth remembering that the mechanical parts run 24 hours a day when used, so the watch must undergo regular maintenance to ensure long life and good operation.
Have watch checked periodically for water-resistance by an Authorized Panerai Service Centre and renovate it every two years with regular servicing, or whenever the watch has to be opened. The restoration of water-resistance necessarily involves replacing the seals in order to ensure the maximum water resistance and protection. Where the watch is used in underwater sports activities, it is recommended that it should be checked every year before the underwater activities begin.
Have the movement of watch checked periodically by an Authorized Panerai Service Centre in order to preserve its perfect operation. If the watch has a tendency to gain or lose time to a significant degree, the movement may need to be overhauled. The movements are designed to withstand temperature variations between -10°C and +60°C (14°F and 140°F). Outside this range of temperatures, operational variations exceeding those set out in the specifications of the movement may be noticed. In addition, there is a risk that the lubricants contained in the movement may deteriorate, resulting in damage to some of its parts.
CLEANING THE EXTERIOR
To keep the exterior in perfect condition, we recommend washing Panerai watch with soap and warm water, using a soft brush. After this operation, and also after immersion in the sea or a swimming pool, carefully rinse the watch with fresh water. All Panerai watches can be cleaned with a soft, dry cloth.
Panerai straps must be washed in warm water and left to dry. It is important not to dry them on a hot surface or expose them to direct sunlight, because the rapid evaporation of the water could damage their shape and quality. After each immersion in the sea or a swimming pool, carefully rinse the strap with fresh water. It is recommended that the strap and the buckle should be replaced by an Authorized Distributor or a Panerai Service Centre, in order to avoid any problems caused by incorrect replacement. Only an Authorized Distributor or Panerai Service Centre can guarantee the use of genuine Panerai straps, properly designed to fit the dimensions of the case and manufactured according to the quality standards of the brand. All alligator leather used by Officine Panerai comes from farms in Louisiana, USA. Officine Panerai’s suppliers have committed to the highest standard of responsibility and have given their assurance that such farms in Louisiana contribute to the stable growth of wild alligators, thus protecting this endangered species. Panerai does not use leather coming from endangered species taken from the wild.
The P.9100 calibre is the first automatic movement with chronograph functions developed by Officine Panerai and it is produced entirely in the Panerai manufacture in Neuchâtel, with materials and standards of workmanship at the peak of the sector in terms of technology, quality and reliability. With a chronograph with a vertical clutch and column wheel, the new calibre is unusual in that the chronograph minutes are displayed by a central hand which jumps forward once every 60 seconds. It also has the useful flyback function. This enables the chronograph hands which are already running to be returned instantaneously to zero and restarted without first having to stop them, return them to zero and then restart them. This function is controlled by the push-button at eight o’clock, which is also used to return both hands to zero when the chronograph has already stopped. The P.9100 calibre is 13¾ lignes (31 mm) in diameter and 8.15 mm thick; it has 37 jewels and consists of 302 components. The two spring barrels in series give a power reserve of 72 hours. The choice of the double spring barrel enables thinner, longer springs to be used, which is beneficial for the duration and evenness of the supply of energy. The automatic winding is carried out by a bidirectional rotor on ball-bearings operating two narrow arms terminating with hooks, which wind the springs of the barrels with every movement of the rotor itself. Supported by a single bridge with a KIF Parechoc® anti-shock device, the Glucydur® balance wheel oscillates at 28,800 vibrations/hour (equivalent to 4hz) and it is the variable inertia type, with the regulation carried out by adjusting four square-headed screws fitted in the outer perimeter of the balance wheel; the spring is therefore free, without the curb pins which can be a source of irregular timekeeping.
