Designed particularly for those who travel, the Luminor 1950 3 Days GMT 24H is a new watch from Officine Panerai with the GMT 24H function. As well as local time, this enables the time in a second time zone to be read simultaneously by means of an independent central hand which makes one revolution of the dial in 24 hours. GMT is short for Greenwich Mean Time, the time at the Greenwich Royal Observatory, which is the universal reference point for calculating time zones. The Luminor 1950 3 Days GMT 24H is the first watch from Officine Panerai to adopt a new manufacture movement, the automatic P.9003 calibre. The main innovation relates to the GMT function, which is indicated over 24 hours instead of 12 hours; it also has a newly designed circular power reserve indicator on the back of the watch, which is very visible and easy to read through the sapphire crystal in the caseback. The GMT 24H function is also evident in the design of the black dial: as well as the classic markers for reading the local time, the outermost part of the dial carries the figures for reading the second time zone, indicated by the hand with an arrow. The clarity and legibility of the dial, which also contains the date window and the small seconds counter at nine o’clock, are ensured in the poorest lighting conditions by its sandwich structure: the luminous substance is contained between two discs and shines through holes in the upper one corresponding to the markers. This type of construction has been used by Panerai watches since the 1930s and confirmed over the years as a distinctive mark of the Florentine brand. Another iconic element of the brand is the device protecting the winding crown with the locking leaver, revived in the Luminor 1950 3 Days GMT 24H in its most classic version: it is made of brushed steel contrasting with the polished steel of the case. The Luminor 1950 case 44 mm is AISI 316L steel, which is stainless with a low carbon content and particularly resistant to corrosion. Water-resistant to 30 BAR (~300 metres), the Luminor 1950 3 Days GMT 24H is fitted with a black leather strap with ecru stitching. It is supplied with a spare rubber strap, a steel screwdriver and the tool for replacing the strap, an operation that is simply carried out thanks to the push-pieces in the lugs.
AISI 316L 1.4435 stainless steel is Officine Panerai’s material par excellence since it is highly resistant to corrosion and is hypoallergenic, making it ideal for contact with the skin.
The Panerai watches created for the Italian Navy were made of austenitic stainless steel, a reliable material that was also resistant to the extreme environmental conditions in which the commandos operated. AISI 316L, a specification of the American Iron and Steel Institute, is an austenitic stainless steel alloy with a chromium content of 16–18%, 11–14% nickel and 2–3% molybdenum.
Officine Panerai uses the low-carbon variant of this alloy: the lower carbon content of the steel improves its welding qualities where the metal’s thickness is 6mm or less. The excellent technical qualities of this material make it an essential element of every new Officine Panerai collection.
Panerai watches are produced to very high standards of quality. It is worth remembering that the mechanical parts run 24 hours a day when used, so the watch must undergo regular maintenance to ensure long life and good operation.
Have watch checked periodically for water-resistance by an Authorized Panerai Service Centre and renovate it every two years with regular servicing, or whenever the watch has to be opened. The restoration of water-resistance necessarily involves replacing the seals in order to ensure the maximum water resistance and protection. Where the watch is used in underwater sports activities, it is recommended that it should be checked every year before the underwater activities begin.
Have the movement of watch checked periodically by an Authorized Panerai Service Centre in order to preserve its perfect operation. If the watch has a tendency to gain or lose time to a significant degree, the movement may need to be overhauled. The movements are designed to withstand temperature variations between -10°C and +60°C (14°F and 140°F). Outside this range of temperatures, operational variations exceeding those set out in the specifications of the movement may be noticed. In addition, there is a risk that the lubricants contained in the movement may deteriorate, resulting in damage to some of its parts.
CLEANING THE EXTERIOR
To keep the exterior in perfect condition, we recommend washing Panerai watch with soap and warm water, using a soft brush. After this operation, and also after immersion in the sea or a swimming pool, carefully rinse the watch with fresh water. All Panerai watches can be cleaned with a soft, dry cloth.
Panerai straps must be washed in warm water and left to dry. It is important not to dry them on a hot surface or expose them to direct sunlight, because the rapid evaporation of the water could damage their shape and quality. After each immersion in the sea or a swimming pool, carefully rinse the strap with fresh water. It is recommended that the strap and the buckle should be replaced by an Authorized Distributor or a Panerai Service Centre, in order to avoid any problems caused by incorrect replacement. Only an Authorized Distributor or Panerai Service Centre can guarantee the use of genuine Panerai straps, properly designed to fit the dimensions of the case and manufactured according to the quality standards of the brand. All alligator leather used by Officine Panerai comes from farms in Louisiana, USA. Officine Panerai’s suppliers have committed to the highest standard of responsibility and have given their assurance that such farms in Louisiana contribute to the stable growth of wild alligators, thus protecting this endangered species. Panerai does not use leather coming from endangered species taken from the wild.
In 2014 Officine Panerai launches its new P.9003 movement, completely developed and made in the Officine Panerai Manufacture in Neuchâtel. Its characteristic feature is the GMT 24H function, with second time zone indication on the edge of the dial, fitted with an automatic in-house movement. The GMT (Greenwich Mean Time) system, divides the terrestrial globe into 24 time zones, each equivalent to 15° of longitude. The Greenwich meridian, meridian 0°, was historically used as the fundamental reference for the definition of local time zones since the International Conference of Rome in 1883 and it has always been extremely important for seamen: the time at Greenwich is the reference for the calculations which enable to determine the longitude at sea, thus establishing the precise position of the vessel. With a diameter of 13¾ lignes and a thickness of 7.9 mm, the P.9003 movement has 28 jewels, it is made of 233 components and its balance wheel oscillates at a frequency of 4 Hz, equivalent to 28,800 alternations per hour. It is also fitted with a special seconds reset device which enables the watch to be perfectly synchronised with a reference time signal. With two spring barrels linked in series, the power reserve is three days. A special Luminor 1950 case has been created for this movement which preserves the original proportions and displays a less convex sapphire crystal.
