In Depth

The new LUMINOR DUE collection is a new chapter in the history of Panerai. It is the result of a challenge successfully overcome by the designers and engineers of the Panerai Manufacture: to offer enthusiasts a new interpretation of the brand’s iconic watch, the Luminor, which is faithful to the original aesthetic but with more contemporary functionality, achieved by a reduction in the thickness of the case compared to the historic one which is up to 40% for some models. With a thickness of only 10.5 mm, the case of the new Luminor Due 3 Days is the thinnest Luminor case ever created. The remarkable efforts of Panerai’s designers are seen in a reduction in the thickness of almost 40% compared to several models in the Luminor 1950 collection with the same diameter. This reduction of thickness – and of weight – has been devised for all those who want to enjoy the distinctive identity of a Panerai watch while enjoying a different experience on the wrist. Once again, Italian design and Swiss watchmaking technical expertise have joined together to renew the history of a unique brand in the panorama of international high quality sports watchmaking. The case of the new Luminor Due 3 Days is 42 mm in diameter has the classic bridge device with sealing lever which protects the winding crown, and every component has a polished finish. The sapphire crystal reveals the classic minimalist Panerai dial with figures and bar hour markers and the small seconds dial at 9 o’clock. The back of the new Luminor Due 3 Days is transparent, so that the hand-wound P.1000 calibre can be admired. The Luminor Due 3 Days is supplied with a black alligator strap. It is water-resistant to 3 bar (about 30 metres).

Materials

Steel

AISI 316L 1.4435 stainless steel is Officine Panerai’s material par excellence since it is highly resistant to corrosion and is hypoallergenic, making it ideal for contact with the skin.

The Panerai watches created for the Italian Navy were made of austenitic stainless steel, a reliable material that was also resistant to the extreme environmental conditions in which the commandos operated. AISI 316L, a specification of the American Iron and Steel Institute, is an austenitic stainless steel alloy with a chromium content of 16–18%, 11–14% nickel and 2–3% molybdenum.

Officine Panerai uses the low-carbon variant of this alloy: the lower carbon content of the steel improves its welding qualities where the metal’s thickness is 6mm or less. The excellent technical qualities of this material make it an essential element of every new Officine Panerai collection.

Maintenance

Panerai watches are produced to very high standards of quality. It is worth remembering that the mechanical parts run 24 hours a day when used, so the watch must undergo regular maintenance to ensure long life and good operation.

WATER-RESISTANCE

Have watch checked periodically for water-resistance by an Authorized Panerai Service Centre and renovate it every two years with regular servicing, or whenever the watch has to be opened. The restoration of water-resistance necessarily involves replacing the seals in order to ensure the maximum water resistance and protection. Where the watch is used in underwater sports activities, it is recommended that it should be checked every year before the underwater activities begin.

THE MOVEMENT

Have the movement of watch checked periodically by an Authorized Panerai Service Centre in order to preserve its perfect operation. If the watch has a tendency to gain or lose time to a significant degree, the movement may need to be overhauled. The movements are designed to withstand temperature variations between -10°C and +60°C (14°F and 140°F). Outside this range of temperatures, operational variations exceeding those set out in the specifications of the movement may be noticed. In addition, there is a risk that the lubricants contained in the movement may deteriorate, resulting in damage to some of its parts.

CLEANING THE EXTERIOR

To keep the exterior in perfect condition, we recommend washing Panerai watch with soap and warm water, using a soft brush. After this operation, and also after immersion in the sea or a swimming pool, carefully rinse the watch with fresh water. All Panerai watches can be cleaned with a soft, dry cloth.

THE STRAP

Panerai straps must be washed in warm water and left to dry. It is important not to dry them on a hot surface or expose them to direct sunlight, because the rapid evaporation of the water could damage their shape and quality. After each immersion in the sea or a swimming pool, carefully rinse the strap with fresh water. It is recommended that the strap and the buckle should be replaced by an Authorized Distributor or a Panerai Service Centre, in order to avoid any problems caused by incorrect replacement. Only an Authorized Distributor or Panerai Service Centre can guarantee the use of genuine Panerai straps, properly designed to fit the dimensions of the case and manufactured according to the quality standards of the brand. All alligator leather used by Officine Panerai comes from farms in Louisiana, USA. Officine Panerai’s suppliers have committed to the highest standard of responsibility and have given their assurance that such farms in Louisiana contribute to the stable growth of wild alligators, thus protecting this endangered species. Panerai does not use leather coming from endangered species taken from the wild.

Movement

P.1000 calibre

The P.1000 is a new in-house hand-wound calibre with a power reserve of three days. The movement has the fundamental functions – hours, minutes and the seconds counter at 9 o’clock – and it is 12 lignes (26.8 mm) in diameter with an overall thickness of 3.85 mm. Consisting of 152 components and with 21 jewels, the P.1000 calibre is solid, strong and reliable, and it is immediately recognisable as a Panerai calibre from both the technical and aesthetic points of view. To ensure maximum security and stability, the balance is held by a bridge with two supports, fixed by screws with threaded rings for micrometer adjustment of the height. The oscillation frequency is 4 Hz (28,800 vibrations per hour). With the small seconds dial at 9 o’clock – another of the distinctive characteristics of many contemporary Panerai watches, directly descended from the historic models – the new movement also contains the device which stops the balance and zeroes the seconds hand (seconds reset) when setting the time, for perfect synchronization of the watch with the reference signal.
