In Depth

As in all Panerai watches, the dial of the RADIOMIR 1940 3 DAYS GMT POWER RESERVE AUTOMATIC ACCIAIO – 45mm (PAM00628) is notable for its extreme legibility, both under normal lighting conditions and also in the dark. The classic, large baton hour markers and figures are covered with ecru Super-LumiNova® and all the other elements – the date indicator, the small seconds hand and the power reserve indicator – stand out with great clarity against a black dial with clou de Paris finish in relief. The dial is complemented by a black leather strap. The P.4002 calibre is developed from the automatic P.4000 movement whose main technical characteristics it share: the off-centre micro rotor which rotates in both directions, the power reserve of three days stored in two spring barrels linked in series, the mechanism for stopping the balance, enabling the time to be set with absolute precision and the full balance bridge with twin supports for greater stability. The calibre also have some extremely useful additional functions: the date, the GMT function with a central hand which indicates the time in a second time zone, am/pm indication (relative to home time) in the small seconds dial and, finally, indication of the remaining power reserve positioned directly on the dial at 5 o’clock. Finally, two very useful devices make setting the watch extremely simply and precise: the first is the mechanism which stops the balance and zeroes the seconds hand as soon as the winding crown is pulled out; the second enables the local time hand to be adjusted forward and backward in jumps of one hour at a time, without stopping the minute hand or interfering with the running of the watch, but automatically adjusting the date. The design of the Radiomir 1940 case is faithfully inspired by the historic examples created by Panerai for the commandos of the Italian Navy in around 1940. It is made of AISI 316L stainless steel with a polished finish and it is water-resistant to 10 bar (a depth of about 100 metres).

Materials

Steel

AISI 316L 1.4435 stainless steel is Officine Panerai’s material par excellence since it is highly resistant to corrosion and is hypoallergenic, making it ideal for contact with the skin.

The Panerai watches created for the Italian Navy were made of austenitic stainless steel, a reliable material that was also resistant to the extreme environmental conditions in which the commandos operated. AISI 316L, a specification of the American Iron and Steel Institute, is an austenitic stainless steel alloy with a chromium content of 16–18%, 11–14% nickel and 2–3% molybdenum.

Officine Panerai uses the low-carbon variant of this alloy: the lower carbon content of the steel improves its welding qualities where the metal’s thickness is 6mm or less. The excellent technical qualities of this material make it an essential element of every new Officine Panerai collection.

Maintenance

Panerai watches are produced to very high standards of quality. It is worth remembering that the mechanical parts run 24 hours a day when used, so the watch must undergo regular maintenance to ensure long life and good operation.

WATER-RESISTANCE

Have watch checked periodically for water-resistance by an Authorized Panerai Service Centre and renovate it every two years with regular servicing, or whenever the watch has to be opened. The restoration of water-resistance necessarily involves replacing the seals in order to ensure the maximum water resistance and protection. Where the watch is used in underwater sports activities, it is recommended that it should be checked every year before the underwater activities begin.

THE MOVEMENT

Have the movement of watch checked periodically by an Authorized Panerai Service Centre in order to preserve its perfect operation. If the watch has a tendency to gain or lose time to a significant degree, the movement may need to be overhauled. The movements are designed to withstand temperature variations between -10°C and +60°C (14°F and 140°F). Outside this range of temperatures, operational variations exceeding those set out in the specifications of the movement may be noticed. In addition, there is a risk that the lubricants contained in the movement may deteriorate, resulting in damage to some of its parts.

CLEANING THE EXTERIOR

To keep the exterior in perfect condition, we recommend washing Panerai watch with soap and warm water, using a soft brush. After this operation, and also after immersion in the sea or a swimming pool, carefully rinse the watch with fresh water. All Panerai watches can be cleaned with a soft, dry cloth.

THE STRAP

Panerai straps must be washed in warm water and left to dry. It is important not to dry them on a hot surface or expose them to direct sunlight, because the rapid evaporation of the water could damage their shape and quality. After each immersion in the sea or a swimming pool, carefully rinse the strap with fresh water. It is recommended that the strap and the buckle should be replaced by an Authorized Distributor or a Panerai Service Centre, in order to avoid any problems caused by incorrect replacement. Only an Authorized Distributor or Panerai Service Centre can guarantee the use of genuine Panerai straps, properly designed to fit the dimensions of the case and manufactured according to the quality standards of the brand. All alligator leather used by Officine Panerai comes from farms in Louisiana, USA. Officine Panerai’s suppliers have committed to the highest standard of responsibility and have given their assurance that such farms in Louisiana contribute to the stable growth of wild alligators, thus protecting this endangered species. Panerai does not use leather coming from endangered species taken from the wild.

Movement

P.4002 calibre

The P.4002 calibre is an automatic movement completely developed and made in the Panerai Manufacture at Neuchâtel and it was designed and conceived from the P.4000. Its main features are:: the off-centre micro rotor which rotates in both directions, the power reserve of three days stored in two spring barrels linked in series, the mechanism for stopping the balance, enabling the time to be set with absolute precision and the full balance bridge with twin supports for greater stability. The calibre also have some extremely useful additional functions: the date, the GMT function with a central hand which indicates the time in a second time zone, am/pm indication (relative to home time) in the small seconds dial and, finally, indication of the remaining power reserve positioned directly on the dial at 5 o’clock.
