RADIOMIR PLATINO – 47MM

Officine Panerai presents the Radiomir Platino – 47mm, the exquisite new Special Edition model inspired for the first time by a rare example of the Radiomir dating from the late 1930s. At the same time as it was supplying the Italian Navy with watches designed for the underwater missions of its commandos, the Panerai store in Florence made a few examples of the Radiomir with a special 12-sided bezel, carrying the inscription “OFFICINE PANERAI – BREVETTATO”. The presence of this inscription, referring to the patent of the luminous substance Radiomir which later gave its name to the watch itself, suggests that these models were not for use in wartime operations but rather for presentation to the military authorities who were testing the new instruments.
The new Radiomir watchfaithfully reproduce the 12-sided bezel of the historic models but the engraving appears only on the back, surrounding the sapphire window through which the movement can be seen, as in the original model. The case reproduces the three-piece structure of the time, with the bezel and back screwed directly to the caseband: a type of construction making it quicker to assemble the watch and easier to replace internal components where necessary. Made of platinum, the case has slender wire loop strap attachments that are removable for replacing the strap and the same diameter of 47 mm as the original examples. The vintage character of the watch is reinforced by its original spherical winding crown. As in every Panerai, the dial has a strong, clean design giving it the maximum clarity and legibility, aspects enhanced by the elegant contrast between the dark brown of the dial and the ecru of the luminous substance placed between the two superimposed discs forming the traditional sandwich construction. The dial is surrounded by the 12-sided bezel with brushed finish, contrasting with the polished case, and it is protected by a slightly cambered Plexiglas® crystal, as in the historic models. The new Radiomir Platino is being made in limited editions of one hundred units each and issupplied with a brown alligator strap fastened by a folding clasp of white gold. Inspired by the water-resistant originals, the new model is water-resistant to about 50 metres.

PLATINUM

Platinum is a rare metal, one of the rarest and most valuable in the world: to obtain just a few grams, for example, it is necessary to mine and process up to ten tonnes of rock. Processing this raw material and turning it into an ingot of platinum takes five months of work, while in the case of gold only three tonnes of rock and five weeks of work are needed. When it was discovered in Colombia in 1750, the similarity of platinum’s appearance to silver gave it its name - plata in Spanish means “silver” - but in terms of value and simplicity of working, the two materials are very different.
Officine Panerai uses 950 platinum (Pt950 Ru, 95% pure platinum) and its specific weight is 11% heavier than 24K gold. This alloy is recommended for machining, but it is not suitable for casting and cannot be hardened by heat treatment. Ductile, malleable and corrosion-resistant, platinum requires a long, complex working process. Stamping a platinum case, for example, requires a specially calibrated press.
The tooling used is subject to greater wear, and meticulous cleaning of the technical instrumentation is required. The polishing stage is particularly complicated and very different from that used for gold, because of the particular characteristics of this material. It has to be carried out entirely by hand, since it cannot be done using automatic tools. The engraving stage is similarly very complex.

Working

Platinum has a good level of hot and cold deformability. Air annealing can be carried out without difficulty. It is advisable to limit the number of times the metal is annealed and to carry out preliminary hardening of at least 30%. The time and temperature of annealing must be controlled to prevent enlargement of the grain (“orange peel” effect).

Panerai watches are produced to very high standards of quality. It is worth remembering that the mechanical parts run 24 hours a day when used, so the watch must undergo regular maintenance to ensure long life and good operation.

WATER-RESISTANCE

Have watch checked periodically for water-resistance by an Authorized Panerai Service Centre and renovate it every two years with regular servicing, or whenever the watch has to be opened. The restoration of water-resistance necessarily involves replacing the seals in order to ensure the maximum water resistance and protection. Where the watch is used in underwater sports activities, it is recommended that it should be checked every year before the underwater activities begin.

THE MOVEMENT
Have the movement of watch checked periodically by an Authorized Panerai Service Centre in order to preserve its perfect operation. If the watch has a tendency to gain or lose time to a significant degree, the movement may need to be overhauled. The movements are designed to withstand temperature variations between -10°C and +60°C (14°F and 140°F). Outside this range of temperatures, operational variations exceeding those set out in the specifications of the movement may be noticed. In addition, there is a risk that the lubricants contained in the movement may deteriorate, resulting in damage to some of its parts.

CLEANING THE EXTERIOR
To keep the exterior in perfect condition, we recommend washing Panerai watch with soap and warm water, using a soft brush. After this operation, and also after immersion in the sea or a swimming pool, carefully rinse the watch with fresh water. All Panerai watches can be cleaned with a soft, dry cloth.

THE STRAP
Panerai straps must be washed in warm water and left to dry. It is important not to dry them on a hot surface or expose them to direct sunlight, because the rapid evaporation of the water could damage their shape and quality. After each immersion in the sea or a swimming pool, carefully rinse the strap with fresh water. It is recommended that the strap and the buckle should be replaced by an Authorized Distributor or a Panerai Service Centre, in order to avoid any problems caused by incorrect replacement. Only an Authorized Distributor or Panerai Service Centre can guarantee the use of genuine Panerai straps, properly designed to fit the dimensions of the case and manufactured according to the quality standards of the brand. All alligator leather used by Officine Panerai comes from farms in Louisiana, USA. Officine Panerai’s suppliers have committed to the highest standard of responsibility and have given their assurance that such farms in Louisiana contribute to the stable growth of wild alligators, thus protecting this endangered species. Panerai does not use leather coming from endangered species taken from the wild.
