ABOUT LUNA ROSSA
1997 – MILAN, ITA LUNA ROSSA IS BORN
The Luna Rossa team is born in Milan one February evening from the meeting between entrepreneur Patrizio Bertelli and Argentine yacht designer Germán Frers, who both decide to participate in the 30th America’s Cup. On April 21st, the Punta Ala Yacht Club formally launches its challenge to the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron, Defender of the Cup.
2000 (YCPA) – AUCKLAND, NZL VICTORY OF THE CHALLENGER SELECTION SERIES
At its debut with the Yacht Club Punta Ala, Luna Rossa wins the Challenger Selection Series (Louis Vuitton Cup), gaining the right to challenge Black Magic, the Kiwi Defender boat, in the final: for the first time in history, the Cup Match takes place without an American boat and with an Italian helmsman (Francesco de Angelis) on board the challenger finalist. The Cup will remain in the hands of the New Zealanders, but Luna Rossa brings home a record: 38 victories out of 49 preliminary races held.
2003 (YCPA) – AUCKLAND, NZL CHALLENGER OF RECORD
At the end of the 2000 edition, Luna Rossa was the first team to challenge for the Cup in 2003, thus becoming Challenger of Record (the challenger that, together with the Defender, writes the rules of the next edition). The Italian boat stops in the semi-finals of the Challenger Selection Series against the emerging Swiss team that goes on to win the 31st America’s Cup: Alinghi.
2007 (YCI) – VALENCIA, ESP THE EUROPEAN FINAL
After over a century, the Cup is held in Europe, with 12 participants. Luna Rossa is represented by the Yacht Club Italiano and defeats the American team Oracle 5 -1 in the semifinals, also thanks to the skill of the very young helmsman Jimmy Spithill. The team reaches the final of the Louis Vuitton Cup, after five hard-fought races against Emirates Team New Zealand.
2013 (CVS) – SAN FRANCISCO, USA THIRD FINAL
The Louis Vuitton Cup kicks off in San Francisco Bay with the AC72 maxi catamarans. Luna Rossa, racing under the burgee of the Circolo della Vela Sicilia, qualifies for the Challenger Selection Final for the third time, although it will then be the New Zealanders to take on the challenge to the Americans of Oracle in the Final Match. With a legendary comeback, the US Defender wins the 34th America’s Cup.
2015 Withdrawal
In April 2015, after launching its fifth challenge for the America’s Cup, the Luna Rossa team decided to withdraw from the competition following changes in the Class Rule that had already been approved by all participants from the 35th America’s Cup, imposed unilaterally by the Defender by means of an unprecedented procedure.
2017 BERMUDA
Luna Rossa launched its sixth challenge as Challenger of Record.
2021 (CVS) – AUCKLAND, NZL THE BEST ITALIAN TEAM
Once again Challenger of Record, the Italian team participates in the drafting of the new Class of boats (AC75 foiling monohulls) adopted for the 36th America’s Cup – presented by PRADA. In this edition, Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli wins the Challenger Selection Series (PRADA Cup) and faces the Defender ETNZ in the Final Match. Out of ten races held, Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli wins three, the best result ever for an Italian team.
2024 (CVS) – BARCELONA, ESP THE SIXTH CHALLENGE
Led by Skipper and Team Director Max Sirena and representing the Circolo della Vela Sicilia for the third time, Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli is challenging for the Louis Vuitton 37th America’s Cup again onboard an AC75 foiling monohull. In order to build a highly competitive boat, the team has tested solutions, materials and technologies on its LEQ12 prototype, built and developed in-house at the Cagliari base.
THE LUNA ROSSA PRADA PIRELLI TEAM
SHORE TEAM
The 35-person beating heart of the Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli team.
Working both in the water and on land, the shore team is ready to take action at a moment’s notice. This team starts their work when the boat returns to land and finishes the next day, when the boat returns to the water again. Working inside tents and shipping containers, the team develops new parts and repairs daily damage. The team is divided into several units: composite and carbon manufacturing, hydraulics, electronics, riggers, sailmakers, mechanical workshop, deck equipment and painting. The team is responsible for the maintenance of the boat and builds custom-made small-to-medium-sized parts that connect the boat’s standard features with its more specific components.
DESIGN TEAM
This 37-member team is by far the largest and is divided into 5 units: naval architecture, structural engineering, mechanical engineering, computer engineering and aero and hydrodynamic engineering.
As well as designing the hulls, sails and all the custom design components, the team analyses the data from the simulator and from the computers connected to the hull during sea training. In coordination with the Sailing team and the Shore team, they work every day to design solutions that increase the boat’s performance.
SAILING TEAM
11 team members will be competing on board the AC75: helmsman, mainsail trimmer, foil trimmer and the grinders. The team, with veterans and New Generation members, is composed of 21 men, included the coach. At sea they train with different types of boats, on ground they train on the simulator and in the gym. In addition to their specific boat roles, members have a specific role in coordination with the Shore team or the Design team to improve the performance of the boat.
Women’s Team and New Generation
With the introduction of the Youth America’s Cup and the Women’s America’s Cup during the 37th edition of the competition, Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli are now able to enter their many young talents into competition, having trained them for years through the ‘New Generation’ programme. These talents include women and girls who’ve excelled during the team's Cagliari training camps, designed for the most promising Italian sailors, and who’ve demonstrated their ability on foiling boats at international sailing camps.
