Characteristics
The Panerai P.2002 is the first in-house calibre, designed and developed by the Panerai Manufacture, launched in 2005. The name "P.2002" reflects the year the project began, marking over 20 years of development. This hand-wound movement offers an 8-day power reserve, displayed with a linear indicator on the dial. Key features include three patented spring barrels ensuring consistent force for the entire power reserve, a GMT function for displaying a second time zone, a seconds reset device for precise time setting, rapid local time adjustment, and an automatic date change. The seconds reset mechanism allows for synchronization with reference time by resetting the seconds hand to zero when the crown is pulled out. The P.2002/E movement, based on the P.2002, features an equation of time function, highlighting the historical link between time measurement and astronomy. The equation of time indicates the difference between 'true solar time', when the sun is at its highest point, and 'mean solar time', the average of the true solar day over the year. On the dial, this difference is shown by a linear indicator at the 6 o'clock position, which displays the current equation of time value.
