The Depths of Time

The Depths of Time made its debut in Florence on 10th September 2025, celebrating the anniversary of that milestone moment in 1993 when Panerai transitioned from military secret to civilian watchmaker.
Set in the birthplace where Panerai’s story began over 160 years ago, the exhibition traces the brand’s evolution from early Italian Navy commissions in the 1910s to key moments of technical development and functional evolution.
Visitors encountered rare archival materials, technical instruments, tool watches, and never-before-seen objects from various collections, including pieces from the historic Villino Panerai, the family home and the first Panerai Laboratorio di Idee.

Now set to travel to other remarkable destinations, the exhibition features the new Luminor Marina Militare PAM05218: a tribute edition to the original ref. 5218-202/A introduced in 1993 and once worn exclusively by Marina Militare personnel.

Luminor Marina Militare

This new timepiece pays tribute to the iconic reference 5218-202/A - one of three models introduced in 1993, and the only one created exclusively for the Marina Militare.

From the redrawn of “Marina Militare” inscription on the dial to the OP logo on the caseback, the new Luminor Marina Militare PAM05218 mirrors the design of the iconic 5218-202/A - the 44mm case of which marked a departure from the original 47mm size of Panerai’s 1940s and 1960s models, shifting toward a more refined design.

The PAM05218 elevates this legacy with a durable steel case coated in DLC, replicating the original's black PVD finish. Beneath the surface lies the hand-wound P.6000 calibre, a meticulously assembled movement with a three-day power reserve. Measuring 15½ lignes in diameter, it features a balance wheel that oscillates at 21,600 vibrations per hour and a traversing balance bridge for enhanced stability and precision.

Reimagined with a nod to the original 5218-202/A's unexpected dial variations, this timepiece faithfully reproduces the sought-after "non-matching" effect. Originally caused accidentally by a chemical reaction between tritium and varnish, early pieces developed orange-brown numerals and greenish hands, an anomaly corrected in later batches, making those few originals especially rare.
